This work borrows its format from Raymond Williams' Keywords: A Vocabulary of Culture and Society (1983) — not as an academic citation, but as a method of working. Williams understood that a keyword's shifting, contested meanings are themselves a record: to trace a word's history is to trace the material conditions that produced it, and that the word, in turn, produced in us. The photographic images here forwards this thesis — not in language, but in light and shadow.

If Keywords demonstrates how a vocabulary shapes a culture, this work interrogates the same vocabulary while shaping an individual's consciousness, and unconscious?

i did not arrive at existence and then find the word for it. It already existed, even before i did. i inherited a vocabulary — society, class, family, work, home — words that arrive long before we do, carrying the sediment of conditions we did not choose and cannot fully see. To exist, in this sense, is to be composed by language before we have any hand in composing ourselves.

The photographs here are presented as documentary evidence of not the world as it appears, but the vocabulary through which the world was made legible to me, long before i had the means to question it. The words, the meaning, the vocabulary, i inherit it, resist it, live inside its contradictions, for someone else, it may just be meaningless. The gap between these is not a difference of opinion. It is the material history of who each of us is permitted to become.

Words are never neutral. They carry, encoded within them, the socioeconomic realities, technological landscapes, and political will that shape aspiration, anxiety, and self-perception. And they do not remain outside us. They settle in: in the posture, the gaze, the choices the hand makes before the mind decides. These are the material echoes within the unconscious — unspoken narratives, written not in sentences but in the body's inherited grammar.
